It was expected that the internet would change the face of the music industry, but most people didn't realize it would happen so suddenly. Because full albums can now be downloaded — and stolen — with the click of a mouse, a number of bands are ready to acknowledge that their old way of doing business is no longer feasible.

In July of this year, Montreal's Stars released In Our Bedroom After The War as a digital album immediately after they'd finished its final mixes. The physical copy of the record didn't surface for another two months.

While it's likely that a number of factors played a significant role in the band's decision to go online with their release, bassist Evan Cranley says the main reason was to give the public a choice as soon as possible.

"Most importantly," he explains, "I think it was to give our fans and music listeners a chance to buy it. It's something we didn't really sit on for a long time. We literally gave it to iTunes four days after it was mastered.

"The support has been great. In the first couple of weeks, especially in Canada, they went ahead and bought it."

Stars may have had a hand in starting a digital release trend but Cranley says Radiohead significantly upped the ante with their new "pay what you want" disc, In Rainbows.

"They took it a step farther by asking a very important question," he says. "What's the price of art? What's the price of music? Obviously they have the luxury, because they're Radiohead, to do anything that they want, but that's the power of the artist and the internet right now."

Though they've embraced the digital era, Stars aren't quite ready to completely abandon the CD. For In Our Bedroom, the five-piece took a 'more bang for your buck' approach in hopes their fans would see a need to buy the physical product. The traditional liner booklet was replaced by lyric cards that act as a jigsaw puzzle of the album's cover, and the group also included a DVD with the first 10,000 copies, that documents the creation and performance of their previous disc, Set Yourself On Fire.

"I'm just thinking of a kid that's saved for a week or two to get $20 to go and buy a disc," Cranley muses. "That's what I used to do. If you can put that little extra bit of care into it, I think it just shows the listener that you're looking at your music as a complete package; you're looking at it visually and dramatically. I think that's just something the band has always tried to do — to personalize what can be a cold and lazy medium."

The internet, thankfully, hasn't yet eliminated the need for concerts. Here's where you can catch Stars as they cross the country in November:
