Talking with MTV News on Monday, Ne-Yo spoke about the alleged altercation between his friends Chris Brown and Rihanna. The singer said that he spoke with Rihanna and she said she's "fine," and said that he wants to speak with Brown about the situation.

"She says she's fine," he said. "She didn't go into detail about what happened. I understand it's a painful situation; I didn't push."

During that same interview, Ne-Yo opened up about the problems of domestic abuse and said he'd seen it in his own home growing up.

"At the end of the day, it's wrong," he said. "There's always another way to handle any situation, be it an argument, whatever the case may be. There's always another way to handle it. I come from a household where stuff like that went on between my mother and my father. I just know for a fact there's another way to go. There's always another way to go."

Brown has said that his former stepfather abused his mother, although the stepfather has disputed his account.

"Abuse of any form — be it physical, be it verbal, whatever the case may be — has been going on and is going on right now," Ne-Yo continued. "It's been a problem. It just sucks that it has to happen to people who are in the spotlight for people to actually start talking about it."

While he stresses the need for the issue to be out in the open, he said he's cynical about the attention it's receiving from some quarters. "Now everybody wants to start this club or write this song about it," he said. "And it's like, what about the millions and millions of women that have been battered and are being battered all over the world right now? What about them?

"All of a sudden its big news because it went down between Chris Brown and Rihanna," he added. "That sucks to me."
