Forget the news that Babyshambles is coming out with another album. Frontman Pete Doherty apparently tested negative for drugs as part of his latest rehabilitation program.
Shotter's Nation, the band's follow-up to 2005's Down In Albion, will be released on Oct. 23 through Astralwerks. But Doherty's sober. See, we're not even calling him Doperty.
Babyshambles wrote about three dozen songs for Shotter's Nation, and 12 will appear on the album, which was recorded in London, England's Olympic studio with producer Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur). "The Lost Art Of Murder" features British folk music hero Bert Jansch. That song, "Carry On Up The Morning" and "Crumb Begging Baghead" (which bassist Drew McConnell has described as sounding "a bit like Sonic Youth playing a Stooges song") can be heard on Babyshambles' MySpace page.
The apparently clean Doherty has a chance to redeem himself on Oct. 26, when he appears before a judge for sentencing on several drug charges. He's expected to continue his rehab program until then.
"He wants to give himself a chance," Doherty's lawyer, Sean Curran, told BBC News. "The court knows he's tested negative for drugs throughout his residential program — that's six weeks now."
