Mastodon guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds is in a Las Vegas hospital after being badly injured following the band's performance Sunday evening at the MTV Video Music Awards.
The group performed "Colony Of Birchman" with System Of A Down's Serj Tankian, Queens Of The Stone Age's Josh Homme and Troy Van Leeuwen and the Foo Fighters on the show.
According to a short statement released by the band's management, Hinds sustained a severe head injury following the event. There's no word on the prognosis for Hinds and nothing is on either the band's MySpace page or their official website. "He is being treated by a Las Vegas hospital where he remains hospitalized," the statement says.
However, this short post from a reported associate of the band appeared on Stonerrock.com and provided more insight to what allegedly transpired: "Brent Hinds got jumped in Vegas last night. He got fucked up pretty bad. In the hospital. Brain bleeding. That's all I know."
There are no confirmed tour dates for the band outside of an Oct. 27 slot at the Vegoose Festival in Las Vegas. Mastodon released Blood Mountain, the follow-up to 2004's Leviathan, last September.
Hinds makes a cameo on "Horse Hunter" on The Dillinger Escape Plan's forthcoming Ire Works album.
