'Ye invited Marina and the Diamonds mastermind to a London screening.By James Montgomery

Marina and the Diamonds have long been faves of Kanye West, so it sort of makes sense that West invited Marina Diamandis (who basically is Marina and the Diamonds) to the London screening of his "Runaway" film — unless, of course, you're Diamandis.

"Yeah, I don't know why I was invited. ... I guess it's 'cause I was in town," she laughed. "He's blogged about me before, and though I rarely go out to parties and stuff, I was really interested to see what this was like. So, of course, I went."

So Diamandis was one of the first people to see West's completed film, which he premiered at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts headquarters Wednesday — "There were, like, loads of beautiful people and some champagne and stuff," Diamandis laughed — and while she was definitely impressed, when MTV News spoke to her Thursday (October 7), she was still trying to figure out just what the film was all about.

"It's a very abstract story line. There aren't words in it. I think the whole point of it is it's being done purely because of his absolute love and dedication to visual arts," she said. "And so not everyone is going to like this, definitely. I think perhaps that's a good thing, because most of his fans, who kind of are in the pop-music-buying world will be opened up to something entirely new.

"It definitely was a stunning visual film, but the story line was very abstract. ... It's the type of film an artist would make," she continued. "Like I said, not everyone's going to like it, but those who appreciate a pretty picture and who love the concept of a visionary artist will really love it. And he is 100 percent a visionary artist."

In keeping with that tone, Diamandis didn't necessarily agree with West's own assessment that "Runaway" was an updated take on classics like Pink Floyd's "The Wall" or Prince's "Purple Rain." To her, it was something completely different.

"It was far more into the artsy-fartsy world, to be honest," she said. "I actually really admire him for it. Like I said, I'm someone who's insanely obsessed with finding photographs, and as an artist, I'm very visual, so that's my take on it."

But while she was enthused — if not slightly befuddled — by West's film, she was equally as bowled over by West himself. Even if she didn't actually get to meet him.

"He's so obsessed with art. He lives it. He's one of a kind in his game, and obviously, this [film] is a passion project for him," she explained. "He stayed for ages at the Q&A session — like, so much so that I had to leave, because I was busting for the loo. I was supposed to meet him, but I couldn't stay, because once you go to the loo, you can't come back in."
