Slipknot bassist Paul Gray, who was found dead in an Iowa hotel room on May 24, died of an "accidental" overdose of morphine and fentanyl, a medical examiner has ruled.
According to a statement issued to MTV News on Monday (June 21) by the Urbandale (Iowa) Police Department, the Polk County Medical Examiner's Office has completed its toxicology tests and final autopsy report on Gray, which found that his death was due to an accidental overdose of the injected drugs — fentanyl is a potent synthetic morphine substitute — and that he also suffered from "significant heart disease."
One day after Gray's body was discovered in the TownePlace Suites hotel in Urbandale, a 911 call placed by an alleged employee of the hotel was obtained by TMZ. The caller said that Gray's body was surrounded by prescription pills and that "there's a hypodermic needle next to his bed here."
The initial autopsy report on Gray's body — performed by the same medical examiner — determined that there was no foul play involved in his death, but that a final cause could not be determined until toxicology tests were completed.
In the days following his death, Gray, who helped form Slipknot back in 1995 and was the only bass player the band ever had, was remembered by fans, fellow musicians and friends in his hometown of Des Moines. His Slipknot bandmates also held an emotional press conference, during which they called him "The best of us."
