But mom Katherine is behind the projects: 'Our family is thrilled that Cirque du Soleil will pay tribute to my son.'By Larry Carroll

Earlier this week, Cirque du Soleil announced an intriguing partnership with the Michael Jackson estate that would result in a pair of multimillion-dollar stage shows honoring the King of Pop. But despite initial indications otherwise, the two parties might not be in harmony.

"That's something else, isn't it? I won't see it," family patriarch Joe Jackson told PopEater.com when asked for comment on the Cirque shows — one permanently in Las Vegas and another set to tour the world.

Jackson's comments are in stark contrast to those of Cirque President and CEO Daniel Lamarre, who said he had the Jackson family's full approval when MTV News interviewed him earlier this week.

"We came to an agreement with Michael Jackson's estate to create and produce two shows," Lamarre said. "We went to John Branca and John McClain, who are managing the estate.

"One thing that was most touching to me was the reaction of his mother, who said that Michael Jackson always wanted to do something with Cirque du Soleil," Lamarre added. "So [she said], 'Let's go with them,' and that was so touching to us. I think I feel the pressure we have now to deliver to her expectations and to their family and friends' expectations."

As Jackson fans know, the rift between Joe and Katherine Jackson — his estranged wife and Michael's mother — has grown quite massive. Katherine has given the Cirque initiative — which also includes plans for MJ-themed nightclubs, restaurants and a reality show — her approval.

"Our family is thrilled that Cirque du Soleil will pay tribute to my son in such an important way," Mrs. Jackson said in a press statement announcing the collaboration.

The estate of Michael Jackson and Cirque will each own 50 percent of the Michael Jackson projects and will share equally in the cost of creating, developing, building and producing them — as well as in the profits from each project. The estate will also receive royalties for various "intellectual property" used throughout the MJ projects. All in all, it's a deal that could potentially make millions for both Cirque and the Jacksons — even if not everyone in the family agrees on whether it should be done.
