Less than 24 hours after "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell chastised this year's crop of contestants — well, all of them except for Crystal Bowersox — for not pushing themselves hard enough, voters got a chance to have their say on the matter during Wednesday night's (March 24) results show. And, well, they pretty much said the same thing.
Yes, it was judgment night for the "Idol" top 11, and Paige Miles, whose take on Phil Collins' "Against All Odds" Tuesday night was pretty underwhelming, was the one voters sent packing.
"It was a roller coaster of a lifetime," the emotional Miles told host Ryan Seacrest after learning her fate. "I had a lot of health issues going on out here, laryngitis ... and [some] bad song choices, but I still had a blast, and it was a great learning experience."
Miles didn't even get the chance to sing for her safety, as Cowell shot down any hope of her earning the judges' save immediately after she was eliminated.
"Regardless of your singing, you're going to end up going home tonight," Cowell said. "It's gotten to a point where it's not working. I don't want to give you any false hope here. It's the end."
Dang.
Joining Miles in the bottom three was Tim Urban, whose saccharine version of Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" and subsequent onstage knee slide mystified viewers and judges alike (though, it should be noted that guest mentor Miley Cyrus thought said slide "was awesome"). Katie Stevens, who turned Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry" into an adult-contemporary number, also ended up among the lowest vote-getters.
Stevens was immediately saved, meaning she was guaranteed a slot on this summer's Idols Live! Tour (as you are probably aware, the top 10 contestants land a bunk on the tour bus), but Urban was left to sweat it out until the very end of the broadcast, while an audience that included Siobhan Magnus' blood-soaked cheering session — the so-called "Siobhanbies" ... you know, like zombies — looked on.
They actually got to see a pretty good show too. Cyrus performed a sweeping version of her single "When I Look at You," aided by a grand piano, a backing band and tons of dry-ice smoke, and real-life sweethearts Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato dueted on "Make a Wave."
But the show closed with Miles hitting the road and the "Idol" top 10 firmly in place. Next week, they'll tackle soul and R&B with special guest mentor Usher.
