Mary J. Blige recently joined Kara DioGuardi, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson at the judging table during the "American Idol" audition stop in Atlanta. After her guest stint on the show, Blige revealed the biggest secret from behind the judges' table: Simon is actually nice.
"I guess the fact Simon is a really nice person [surprised me most]," she told MTV News on the red carpet at the Essence Black Women in Music event in Hollywood. "I mean, my experience on 'American Idol' ... it was finding out for myself, which I never judge Simon — I just always wait till I see people for myself; he was a really nice guy."
Other than learning about Simon's secretly charming personality, Blige also realized that being a judge on the show is not at all easy. "At the end of the day it's hard being a judge on 'American Idol,' " she added. "It's extremely hard because it's unbelievable some of the things that take place, but you still have to recognize or realize that people might actually be serious."
One of the standout contestants during Blige's time on the show included Larry Platt and his instant smash hit "Pants on the Ground," a ditty that had Blige in stitches. "Wow, when the man was performing 'Pants on the Ground,' I couldn't believe what was happening," she recalled. "When he did the split and the whole nine, I was like, 'I'm done. This show is over. Please get me out of here 'cause I'm just gonna burst.' And I did and I think I brought some laughter as well, 'cause I like to laugh when things are really funny."
