On Wednesday night, the Black Eyed Peas earned more Grammy nominations — six — than anyone not named Beyoncé, Gaga or Taylor, which shouldn't really have come as a surprise, considering they've dominated the singles chart with historical prowess this year.
But, as it turns out, they were surprised to hear their name called in categories like Record and Album of the Year — and humbled too — as they told MTV News immediately following the Grammy Nominations telecast.
"This is a blessing. We're very blessed," Fergie said. "The thing is, we're still hungry, we're still working hard ... and all of the work we've put into it just makes us appreciate it more."
The Peas' two massive singles — "I Gotta Feeling" and "Boom Boom Pow" — each scored a pair of Grammy noms (their album, The E.N.D., grabbed two more), success that the group also credits to that hunger, that drive to push the envelope further than any of their contemporaries. Which is why they decided to work with French producer/DJ David Guetta — who, in addition to his work on the Peas' album, also earned three Grammy nominations for his own album, One Love — in the first place. Together, they reimagined the Peas' sound, injecting it with an electro-pulse, and the rest, as they say, is pop-music history.
"When the record industry's falling apart — and it is — and there's no place to see videos — there's not — you have to find new ways and you have to do what's actually going on. And the DJ world, in the clubs, is where music actually lives. It's not just in America, or New York or LA, it's everywhere in the world," BEP frontman Will.I.Am said. "So, Black Eyed Peas and David Guetta was a perfect combination, because his music plays all over the world, and we travel around the world, and our music is played all over the world. And I think that's the reason 'I Gotta Feeling' and 'Boom Boom Pow' are successful — because we made music for the time. We didn't rely on what was the machine yesterday, we made it for what actually is."
And in keeping with that clubby theme, would the Peas be celebrating their six nominations by partying late into the night at some L.A. hotspot? Not exactly.
"It's [Peas member] Apl's birthday; we're going bowling," Will laughed. "We're having a thing at a bowling alley.
"That's right. Along with the six nominations, it's also my birthday party," Apl laughed. "I'm 21. It feels weird, but I can drink now, so I imagine I might drink some tonight."
